‘Looks unrecognisable!’: Couple’s ‘Unlivable’ Apartment Transformed with IKEA Buys & YouTube Videos, Saving Themselves £9K https://goodshomedesign.com/looks-unrecognisable-couples-unlivable-apartment-transformed-ikea-buys-youtube-videos-saving-9k/ https://goodshomedesign.com/looks-unrecognisable-couples-unlivable-apartment-transformed-ikea-buys-youtube-videos-saving-9k/#respond Fri, 15 Mar 2024 08:15:17 +0000 https://goodshomedesign.com/?p=64774

Rochelle Taylor-Butcher and Angus Ord’s journey from purchasing what they describe as an ‘unliveable’ flat to turning it into a cozy home reflects the power of determination and resourcefulness. The couple, driven by the desire to step onto the housing ladder, embarked on a daunting task without prior experience in renovation. Situated in Kingston, South London, their one-bed flat greeted them with peeling wallpaper, moldy walls, and a musty carpet, yet they saw potential where others might have seen despair. With a mix of grit and ingenuity, Rochelle and Angus turned to YouTube tutorials, transforming themselves into DIY enthusiasts, tackling everything from plumbing to kitchen installation and floorboard sanding.

Their thrifty approach not only saved them nearly £9k by bypassing professional tradespeople but also added £20k to the property’s value, a testament to their hard work and determination. Rochelle’s ecstatic expression upon finally owning a property echoes the dreams of many young homeowners striving for stability and security. Despite facing challenges such as uneaten cornflakes behind the dishwasher and outdated cabinets, the couple remained undeterred, embodying the ethos of perseverance and creativity. Through paint sales, recycled materials, and family assistance, they redefined the notion of home improvement, proving that with dedication and a willingness to learn, one can overcome even the most daunting renovation projects.

Buy a submersible stove for around $750 (http://snorkel.com) – Scuba stove

You’ll need a way to drain the tub. The simplest method is to buy a Quick Drain system—a handheld pump that siphons and vacuums out water ($75; http://hottubessentials.com).

Make an insulating cover out of two-inch closed-cell foam to hold in heat.

This Colorful Shared Kids’ Room Has Private Spaces and Storage For Days https://goodshomedesign.com/colorful-shared-kids-room-private-spaces-storage-days/ https://goodshomedesign.com/colorful-shared-kids-room-private-spaces-storage-days/#respond Tue, 13 Feb 2024 20:59:20 +0000 https://goodshomedesign.com/?p=63955

Rowan and Tim Giles’ vibrant shared kids’ room in their eclectic, Scandinavian-inspired Cheshire home is a testament to resourceful design and family collaboration. Faced with the challenge of needing to borrow space from one room to enhance another during their home renovation, the couple decided to make their children’s shared bedroom even more spacious, totaling an impressive 193 square feet. Despite the necessity of reclaiming space for a family bathroom, the couple cleverly utilized a combination of DIY projects and professional assistance to create private areas, abundant storage, and personalized touches for their 8-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son.

One of the key features of the room is the bunk bed system designed and built by Tim, providing individualized spaces for the children. Since their early years, the kids have enjoyed the unique charm of these beds, each equipped with its shelf and reading light. To maximize storage, built-in solutions play a crucial role in maintaining the room’s sense of expansiveness. A long bench with a cushion along one side of the room conceals ample drawers beneath, perfect for storing large toys and board games. The couple also involved their extended family in the creative process, with Tim’s mother crafting the bench cushion and curtains using IKEA fabric. By blending personal touches, resourceful design, and family involvement, the Giles created a lively and functional space that blends practicality with unique charm, all within a reasonable budget of just over $6,000. Rowan’s favorite aspect of the room is the abundant natural light streaming through a large bay window and a beautiful curved sash window, contributing to the overall warmth and comfort of the space.

This Dreamy Scandinavian Greenhouse Is Also A Chicken Coop https://goodshomedesign.com/dreamy-scandinavian-greenhouse-chicken-coop/ https://goodshomedesign.com/dreamy-scandinavian-greenhouse-chicken-coop/#respond Wed, 03 Jan 2024 20:42:09 +0000 https://goodshomedesign.com/?p=62867

Approximately 25 years ago, designer Lisa Moody had a small garden that eventually took a backseat to raising her children and growing her business. Now, with her children older and her passion for gardening rekindled, Lisa, along with her husband, decided to invest in their garden project. Living on an acre of land in North Surrey, B.C., about an hour from Vancouver, they installed raised beds and, inspired by a trip to Sweden, decided to add a greenhouse and chicken coop to their property. The eight-by-12-foot greenhouse, costing around $10,000, features a black frame for a modern and Scandinavian aesthetic, deviating from the traditional cottagey white-greenhouse look. The greenhouse, equipped with electricity, heat mats, and automatic irrigation, enables Lisa to extend the growing season, start sowing earlier, and cultivate plants like lettuce and herbs throughout the winter, making it an ideal addition to the Canadian climate.

Lisa’s dreamy greenhouse serves multiple functions, blending gardening with the joy of raising chickens. The greenhouse is not only a haven for plants but also shares a wall with the chicken coop, creating a harmonious space where nature and livestock coexist. The project reflects Lisa’s self-taught gardening journey, influenced by resources like Floret Flower Farm and online tutorials, emphasizing the learning-by-trial-and-error approach. With a focus on creating a peaceful and controllable haven during challenging times, Lisa’s greenhouse-chicken coop combo stands as a testament to the therapeutic and rewarding nature of gardening.

Start to Plan in Time for the Warm Season With This DIY Duck Coop https://goodshomedesign.com/start-plan-time-warm-season-diy-duck-coop/ https://goodshomedesign.com/start-plan-time-warm-season-diy-duck-coop/#respond Wed, 03 Jan 2024 20:29:42 +0000 https://goodshomedesign.com/?p=62856

Embarking on a DIY duck coop project over the last 6-8 weeks, the hardworking creators are excited to reveal their masterpieces. The duck run is ingeniously attached to a shed, offering a convenient location for access to fresh water and food, especially when the shed transforms into a she-shed or garden shed in the future. The coop’s dark moody color, graphite by BM, adds a touch of elegance without being overly black. To ensure the safety of the ducklings, the coop is constructed using hardware cloth instead of chicken wire, providing robust protection against potential predators.

Addressing both practicality and aesthetics, pea gravel lines the inside and outside of the coop, contributing to a European feel and preventing mud accumulation. While acknowledging the rising cost of lumber, the creators made strategic use of scrap wood to manage expenses. Plans for a winter roof are in the works to shield the ducks and prevent snow-related issues. A pond, thoughtfully placed in one corner, enhances the ducks’ environment, and a custom-made copper handle facilitates easy water replenishment.

The inclusion of electric and plumbing elements was a meticulous process, ensuring functionality and convenience. Decorative touches, both inside and outside, complement the structure, creating a welcoming and visually appealing space for the ducks. With plans to enhance food options and incorporate playful toys, the DIY duck coop stands as a testament to creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to providing a comfortable and enjoyable home for the ducks.
