Deer LOVE to eat the leaves and berries. They will destroy a patch. The strawberries could easily form above the mesh but I would think you would want them to stay contained beneath it. You would have to push them back.

Protects from birds eating the fruit, mostly, also rabbits, gophers, etc. I tuck my runners back in to keep them from growing fruit outside of my netting.
