It’ll still work yes, but at decreased efficiency. If you’re thinking of building one, consider the aspect of ventilation for air in-flow to the unit.

You should probably consult the owners manual to make sure it’s not to close to the unit. Most manufacturers recommend 12-18 inches of clearance on all sides of the condenser. You don’t want to spend $2,000 replacing a compressor just to get rid of an ugly eyesore.
