I have seen many places where campfires have burned roots underground, takes a very long time to out!

Essentially the fire was burning under the ground and the flames came out of a small thin opening in the ground on top. This way the heat was really concentrated and you could kill the fire really easy in case of emergency by just stepping on it. We dug 1 hole but not straight down but diagonal with the wind the direction. I wish I could draw it for you 😉
