The summer of 2023 marked a significant turning point for grid batteries, showcasing their increasing importance in ensuring grid reliability and resilience. According to data from the American Clean Power industry group and Wood Mackenzie, the second quarter of 2023 saw the highest-ever new grid-storage capacity installations by battery developers, highlighting a rebound from previous quarters affected by COVID-related supply-chain constraints. Concentrated in California and Texas, these installations played a crucial role in supporting the grid during extreme weather events, preventing blackouts, and demonstrating the technology’s effectiveness. In Texas, grid battery capacity surged from 275 megawatts in 2020 to 3,500 megawatts by the summer of 2023, a remarkable 13-fold increase in just three years. The state’s reliance on grid batteries played a pivotal role in avoiding blackouts despite setting 10 records for electricity demand during the summer. Similarly, California, which has been a pioneer in grid battery adoption, increased its grid battery capacity by a factor of 10 in the last three years. Batteries now contribute 7.6% of the nameplate capacity for the power system overseen by the California Independent System Operator.

While these developments underscore the positive impact of grid batteries, challenges such as safety concerns, exemplified by storage plant fires in New York, highlight the need for careful management and regulation in the growing battery fleet. The rise of grid batteries reflects a broader shift toward cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions. While the clichéd understanding is that grid batteries store clean energy for periods of low renewable generation, the reality is more nuanced. Batteries contribute bursts of power at crucial moments with rapid response times, playing a role akin to fossil gas peaker plants in responding to high demand. As lithium-ion batteries currently have limitations on sustained discharge durations, ongoing efforts to commercialize long-duration storage technologies are underway to further enhance the capabilities of grid batteries and support the transition to clean energy. The success of grid batteries in addressing critical reliability challenges positions them as key players in the evolving energy landscape.

Making A Trip Wire Alarm System https://goodshomedesign.com/making-a-trip-wire-alarm-system/ https://goodshomedesign.com/making-a-trip-wire-alarm-system/#respond Wed, 20 Sep 2017 19:35:24 +0000 http://goodshomedesign.com/?p=43303

Have you ever thought about making an alarm when going camping or just to have one in case of emergency? Making a trip wire alarm system is easier than it seems at a first glance and it will notify you in case there is an emergency or an intruder near you. You will need to have a trigger, which will be made out of a wire, fishing line or twine. But when it comes to the mechanism, you have several variations. The most handy one would be to use a battery, so when the alarm is activated a spark would be made and the battery will burn the wires. To learn more about this mechanism and how to make it, check out the video tutorial from the VIDEO below and start building your very own trip wire alarm.

In this video I will show you an interesting idea how to make a TRIP-WIRE ALARM

Eco-friendly battery made from salt and water last 10 times longer https://goodshomedesign.com/eco-friendly-battery-made-from-salt-and-water-last-10-times-longer/ https://goodshomedesign.com/eco-friendly-battery-made-from-salt-and-water-last-10-times-longer/#respond Thu, 11 Feb 2016 16:38:56 +0000 http://goodshomedesign.com/?p=33640 aquion-saltwater-battery

Did you know of this alternative battery that is made from salt and water? It’s the invention of Jay Whitacre, who won the prestigious Lemelson-MIT Prize of $500,000. The battery was named Aqueous Hybrid Ion (AHI) and was developed with the use of non-toxic materials, such as salt water and carbon. The battery is efficinet when it comes in contact with solar and wind energy and it is already manufactured by Whitacre’s company, Aquion Energy. This innovative renawable energy resource, can change the way we interact with technology in our everyday lives and makes this type of energy affordable to anyone. The biggest issue that Whitacre managed to solve is how to store solar energy even after the sun goes down. To find out more about this amazing invention, please take a look below.
