Trying to live an eco-friendlier lifestyle should be this new year’s resolution since the dangers facing the environment are imminent.
Product design companies and the industry are also becoming more conscious about their products and the materials they use, to come up with sustainable solutions.

A young engineer, called Julian Melchiorri, created an innovative product in 2017 which earned him recognition from Forbes and was included among the leading social entrepreneurs in the EU under 30. His design also won various prizes, such as the Emerging Talent Medal at the London Design Festival.

The product he created is a living chandelier, one made from 70 glass leaves, filled with green algae that clean the air and light up the room at the same time. The bionic and modular chandelier was named Exhale and can capture carbon dioxide and release oxygen in the air.
The story of the product starts with the story of Melchiorri, who is a biochemical technology researcher and has been working for several years on ways to develop “artificial leaves” from living organisms.
Together with his team from the start-up, Arborea, they are working on developing a BioSolar Leaf from algae and microscopic plants, that can be then planted near solar panels and on rooftops.

The BioSolar Leaf can have an enormous impact on air purification, as well as, generating environmentally-friendly energy sources. Some test panels have already been set up at Imperial College London’s West London White City campus. Also, the prototype of Exhale is currently exposed in the V&A Museum in London.

DIY Chandelier Made from Glass Coke Bottles https://goodshomedesign.com/diy-chandelier-made-from-glass-coke-bottles/ https://goodshomedesign.com/diy-chandelier-made-from-glass-coke-bottles/#comments Wed, 30 Mar 2016 00:08:34 +0000 http://goodshomedesign.com/?p=35178 Chandelier

Coca Cola isn’t just a tasty and addictive beverage. It is also a good material for all sort of DIY projects. Well, not actually the drink itself, but the glass bottle it comes in. Turning trash into treasure has never been so good. If you’re going to mimic the chandelier done here, you’ll be taking the bottles to a whole new level. The project featured here uses diamonds and water to cut the bottles in half, so this isn’t you’re average DIY project. If you’re up to the challenge, you are not done up to this step. Afterward, you should put them in a kiln to melt down a bit – be careful though not to do it until they become liquid! Glass-on glass work will follow. Watch the video provided to know all about the instructions required for completing a beautiful chandelier make from glass Coke bottles.

Chandeliers Made Out of Recycled Bike Parts https://goodshomedesign.com/chandeliers-made-out-of-recycled-bike-parts/ https://goodshomedesign.com/chandeliers-made-out-of-recycled-bike-parts/#comments Tue, 09 Sep 2014 15:16:57 +0000 http://goodshomedesign.com/?p=20126 recycled-bike-part-chandeliers

Bicycles are not only useful at not harming the environment while still being perfect for providing an efficient way of moving you around the city, but also for making a whole bunch of other stuff. We’re not talking about decorating the home in a hipster way. As you might be aware of, some parts of an old bike are not ready for throwing away. Instead, people use them in any other DIY projects and decorations. These chandeliers made out of metal parts from unused bicycles were used in a very creative way. Not only the outside casing of each chandelier is built entirely with bike parts, the artists Blessing Hancock and Joe O’Connell managed to light a public space with impressive shadow patterns. They achieved this by installing custom LED lights in the Ballroom Luminoso chandeliers. With the DIY work of these artists, everybody can discover the importance of recycling and the value of repurposing bicycles.
