At the age of 51, Jen Gressett has crafted a unique and cost-effective living arrangement near Boulder, Colorado, residing in a 520-square-foot tiny home on wheels situated in someone’s backyard. In 2019, Jen embarked on this unconventional housing journey by purchasing a tiny house shell from a local builder for $45,000. To bring her vision to life, she invested an additional $3,000 for a carefully crafted floor plan. The overall cost of constructing her tiny home amounted to approximately $175,000, covering expenses such as the prefabricated shell structure, labour, and materials. Financing this endeavour involved a strategic combination of resources, with Jen utilizing $85,000 from the sale of her previous home (profits shared with her ex-husband) and a $90,000 loan generously extended by a close friend.

Jen’s tiny home, with its modern farmhouse interior, stands as a testament to both financial ingenuity and the growing trend of alternative housing solutions. Occupying a backyard space secured through a local Facebook group, Jen pays $725 per month, encompassing housing costs, a designated parking space, internet, water, and electricity. This affordable living arrangement not only reflects her commitment to a simpler lifestyle but also underscores the resourcefulness required to navigate housing challenges in high-cost regions like Boulder. Jen’s story exemplifies how creative approaches to homeownership, combined with community connections, can pave the way for unique and financially sustainable living arrangements.

When someone says they live in a farmhouse, the tendency is to imagine a classical or rustic design. But what about someone mentioning a gothic-style farmhouse? This is a unique home design style, invented by Jeff and Sherrie Harris and their home even appeared in the April/May edition of American Farmhouse magazine.
The house is surrounded by beautiful scenery, but once approaching it, one cannot notice the outstanding tin roof design which gives the overall gothic look. The home spreads across 3,800 square-foot and is furnished with the most amazing and unique furniture, completing the farmhouse feels.
The Harrises are collectors of antiquities and peculiar items, and the house is filled with them, one more amazing than the other. It took the couple 4 years to gather every item they wanted to include in the interior design, but the wait was worth it.
They found the perfect architect to recreate their vision in the person of Preston Shea of P. Shea Design from Franklin, Tennessee who built their dream home in a year.
The Harrises also own five horses that roam freely across the land surrounding their gothic farmhouse, truly completing this idyllic picture.

Jeff’s office — one of his other favorite rooms in the house — includes a wooden ceiling, a refinished double-sided partner desk from decades past, and a decorative corner display that holds some of Jeff’s childhood lunch boxes.

This farmhouse is an eco-friendly family retreat built out of grain bins, recreating the looks and feel of a Victorian-styled home. The two grain bins were used to create the sidewalls of the house and then rest was built around them.
Being a Victorian-era-inspired home, the interior also features some traditional elements from that period, such as a large dining table place in the center of the house. This central diner is the space where the family can gather, spend game nights together and reconnect. There is also a large living room that can host a large group of people when having friends over and a fully equipped kitchen.
Grain silo homes are great as they have such a unique design and look very different from traditional ones, and offer plenty of possibilities to get creative with the interior space.

This impressive house was built in 1730, but beautifully and completely restored in 1960. It is called the Leanach Farmhouse and it is located in Scotland. What’s so remarkable about it? Besides the stone walls and cute little windows, the original roof is the one that stands out. Presently, the little cottage’s roof has the distinctive colors of heather, even though the original one may have been thatched with straw.
