In the picturesque landscape of Bali, the harsh reality of a plastic pollution crisis lurks beneath the surface, overshadowing its natural beauty. With a staggering 1.6 million tons of waste generated annually on the island and the additional burden of debris from neighboring shores, the ecological balance of its waters is under threat. However, amidst this environmental challenge, a beacon of hope emerges as two dedicated organizations join forces to tackle the issue head-on. Through the collaborative efforts of Sungai Watch and Sungai Design, Bali’s waterways are undergoing a transformative journey from polluted to pristine, with reclaimed plastic finding new life as sleek and contemporary loungers.

Sungai Watch initiates the cleanup process by strategically identifying and targeting rivers plagued by pollution, and deploying innovative barriers to capture and contain the waste. Since its inception in 2020, the nonprofit has made significant strides, extracting a remarkable 1,718,562 kilograms of plastic from Bali’s watercourses. Once retrieved and meticulously sorted, the plastic undergoes a metamorphosis at the hands of Sungai Design. Through a sophisticated process of shredding and pressing, the material is molded into large panels, which are then transformed by CNC machines into stylish and functional chairs. Not only do these loungers epitomize modern design, but they also embody sustainability, with each chair repurposing an estimated 30 kilograms of plastic, offering a tangible solution to Bali’s environmental crisis. For those intrigued by the journey from pollution to product, a delve into Sungai Design’s YouTube channel provides an illuminating insight, while the opportunity to support the cause and own a piece of eco-conscious furniture is just a click away.

Adam Sheet Is a Translucent and Washable Fabric Made of Recycled Apple Waste https://goodshomedesign.com/adam-sheet-translucent-washable-fabric-recycled-apple-waste/ https://goodshomedesign.com/adam-sheet-translucent-washable-fabric-recycled-apple-waste/#respond Fri, 26 Jan 2024 12:26:32 +0000 https://goodshomedesign.com/?p=63522

Studio Sozai Center, in collaboration with KOMORU Corporation and M&T, has innovatively addressed the environmental challenge posed by discarded apple waste in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, one of the country’s primary apple-producing regions. The solution, known as Adam Sheet, is a translucent and washable fabric made entirely from 100 percent recycled apple pomace. This sustainable material retains the natural reddish-brown hue of the fruit, showcasing Studio Sozai Center’s commitment to preserving the essence of the source material. The fabrication process involves collecting apple pomace from local farmers, transforming it into a fine powder, and then developing it into a washable material without the use of artificial coloring. The resulting Adam Sheet exhibits water and scratch resistance, making it suitable for a range of applications, from apparel to indoor furniture.

Studio Sozai Center has already demonstrated the versatility of Adam Sheet by creating a card case and crossbody pouch, both available for purchase. The products not only showcase the translucent and organic nature of the recycled apple waste material but also offer practical utility. The card case, with front and back pockets, accommodates up to four cards while subtly revealing them through the translucent fabric. Similarly, the crossbody pouch, designed for travel convenience, can hold smartphones, cards, and a passport. As part of responsible ownership, users are advised to avoid contact with certain substances, such as oil, perfume, and cosmetics, to maintain the integrity of the material. Looking ahead, Studio Sozai Center plans to expand its range of Adam Sheet products, emphasizing their dedication to ongoing contributions to the regional apple waste problem through sustainable and innovative solutions.

Wind Turbine Blades Can’t Be Recycled, So They’re Piling Up in Landfills https://goodshomedesign.com/wind-turbine-blades-recycled-piling-landfills/ https://goodshomedesign.com/wind-turbine-blades-recycled-piling-landfills/#respond Wed, 16 Aug 2023 16:48:28 +0000 https://goodshomedesign.com/?p=60575

Companies are searching for ways to deal with the tens of thousands of blades that have reached the end of their lives.

A wind turbine’s blades can be longer than a Boeing 747 wing, so at the end of their lifespan they can’t just be hauled away. First, you need to saw through the lissome fiberglass using a diamond-encrusted industrial saw to create three pieces small enough to be strapped to a tractor-trailer.

Tens of thousands of aging blades are coming down from steel towers around the world and most have nowhere to go but landfills. In the U.S. alone, about 8,000 will be removed in each of the next four years.

Wind turbines harness the kinetic energy of wind and convert it into mechanical energy to generate electricity. Electricity generated in this way is self-replenishing and produces no emissions harmful to our earth’s atmosphere, which is why it’s considered a form of renewable energy.

But for a form of energy to be considered truly ‘green’ – where it has a zero or less-than-zero impact on the environment across its lifespan in terms of waste and emissions – it’s important to also consider its end-of-life environmental impact.

Could wind turbines become 100% sustainable?

For wind turbines to be considered totally sustainable they must be built from 100% recyclable products. That’s why engineers across the world are now focusing efforts on designs that use materials such as thermoplastics that are biodegradable, or that can be reconstituted at the end of their lives.

Needless to say, even in their current form, the positive environmental impact of wind turbines far outweighs the negative, in terms of the critical role they play in reaching a net zero future.

DIY Project: How To Make Roses Using Toilet Tubes https://goodshomedesign.com/diy-project-how-to-make-roses-using-toilet-tubes/ https://goodshomedesign.com/diy-project-how-to-make-roses-using-toilet-tubes/#comments Fri, 20 Feb 2015 00:41:39 +0000 http://goodshomedesign.com/?p=25491 Roses-using-Toilet-Tubes

Toilet paper tubes are not as useless as they may seem once you’ve used all the paper covering them. As you know, any kind of material can be recycled and this is true for these tubes too. With a bit of guidance and cool tips, you can create small decorative roses out of toilet paper cores. You will need: toilet paper tubes, a pair of scissors, a pencil, hot glue gun. Start by cutting the tubes so you will get flat pieces of cardboard. Use a pattern to help you trace the outline of the flower and create several sets. Make the petals too then create the layers of the rose, as shown in the pictures. Curl the sides of each petal and roll one to create a cone. Make this the core of the rose and add the other petals around this. Use the hot glue gun to fix them and when they’re ready, place them around your room or create a piece of wall art.
