Working with wood offers so many possibilities, from furniture design to small design objects and even art installations.
Selva Aparicio is a Spanish artist, who creates art that deals with social issues and brings into the public’s attention subjects such as politics, environment, and social inequalities.
Her work, Childhood Memories, which is her MFA thesis for Yale University and is an installation that explores childhood traumas, and the medium used is a large wood carved rug. Instead of creating a separate piece, Aparicio decided to carve her work directly into the flooring and making it a part of the space.
Viewing it from afar, the installation looks like a patterned rug, but at a closer look the details start to pop out, merging into a complex story of memories and childhood traumas. Aparicio stated that she decided to carve the work into the flooring as it symbolizes the fact that it is there to stay, lingering for long, just like the abuses and sufferings from an early life remain in the minds of victims forever.
The amazing installation can be seen at the International Museum of Surgical Science until the 17th of January 2021.

Artist Selva Aparicio brilliantly transformed a wooden floor for her MFA thesis installation titled Childhood Memories.

Textured Wool Rugs Bring the Natural Pastures of Argentinian Landscapes Indoors https://goodshomedesign.com/textured-wool-rugs/ https://goodshomedesign.com/textured-wool-rugs/#comments Tue, 24 Nov 2020 23:57:27 +0000 http://goodshomedesign.com/?p=53280

A modern home must have a special centerpiece, such as a designer product, a handmade décor, or anything else that might catch the eye and becomes the soul of the room.
Argentinian artist, Alexandra Kehayoglou’s designs can easily become an eye-popping element in your home, as she creates beautiful and life-like wool rugs. Her rugs resemble nature, and she recreates the Argentinian pastures and brings them closer to everyone, placing them inside homes as a décor piece. But Kehayoglou creates her pieces with multifunctionality in mind, so people can use them as rugs, blankets, or simply art that is displayed on the walls.
One of her pieces can take several months to get finished and she uses a hand-tufting technique to make the rugs resemble moss, water, and the pastures of Argentina.
Her raw materials come from her family’s rug factory in Buenos Aires, from where she collects residual materials and lets the beauty of her homeland inspire each creation.
The artist is also inspired by her Greek ancestry, namely, her Greek grandparents and some of her designs have an Ottoman-style pattern that creates a unique blend with the fluidity of the wool.

Beautiful Rug From Old T-Shirts https://goodshomedesign.com/beautiful-rug-t-shirts/ https://goodshomedesign.com/beautiful-rug-t-shirts/#comments Sun, 25 Aug 2013 12:49:32 +0000 http://goodshomedesign.com/?p=11247 1238953_710572545635890_1174354972_n

In this tutorial, you can learn how to make a really cool rug, like the one pictured, from your old T-shirts! This rug costs no money because you can reuse some old T-shirts that you don’t use anymore . This project is a great way to put all of those colorful junior high track/soccer/rugby/quidditch shirts in use if you don’t want to donate them.

Here’s what you’ll need:
– 5-10 old t-shirts, depending on how big you want this rug (I used 5.5 for a small bedside rug)
– a pair of scissors
– needle and thread
– sewing machine (optional)

The hardest part about this was how long it took to be made, but it turned out to be cool enough so that I wouldn’t mind making another one. Keep reading to find out how I did it! Find the steps to follow here….
