Rochelle Taylor-Butcher and Angus Ord’s journey from purchasing what they describe as an ‘unliveable’ flat to turning it into a cozy home reflects the power of determination and resourcefulness. The couple, driven by the desire to step onto the housing ladder, embarked on a daunting task without prior experience in renovation. Situated in Kingston, South London, their one-bed flat greeted them with peeling wallpaper, moldy walls, and a musty carpet, yet they saw potential where others might have seen despair. With a mix of grit and ingenuity, Rochelle and Angus turned to YouTube tutorials, transforming themselves into DIY enthusiasts, tackling everything from plumbing to kitchen installation and floorboard sanding.

Their thrifty approach not only saved them nearly £9k by bypassing professional tradespeople but also added £20k to the property’s value, a testament to their hard work and determination. Rochelle’s ecstatic expression upon finally owning a property echoes the dreams of many young homeowners striving for stability and security. Despite facing challenges such as uneaten cornflakes behind the dishwasher and outdated cabinets, the couple remained undeterred, embodying the ethos of perseverance and creativity. Through paint sales, recycled materials, and family assistance, they redefined the notion of home improvement, proving that with dedication and a willingness to learn, one can overcome even the most daunting renovation projects.

This 23-Year-Old and His Dad Are Turning an Abandoned Home Depot Shed Into an Oversized Tiny Home https://goodshomedesign.com/23-year-old-dad-turning-abandoned-home-depot-shed-oversized-tiny-home/ https://goodshomedesign.com/23-year-old-dad-turning-abandoned-home-depot-shed-oversized-tiny-home/#respond Fri, 15 Dec 2023 22:50:08 +0000 https://goodshomedesign.com/?p=62256

In a captivating venture documented on YouTube, 23-year-old Danner Cronise and his father have embarked on the ambitious task of transforming an abandoned Home Depot shed into a unique and expansive tiny home. The family purchased the $5,250 shed two decades ago for storage purposes on their 22-acre property in the hills of southern Tennessee. Originally intended as a temporary residence while building a new home, the shed became a neglected structure until Cronise’s father revisited the property in 2020.

Prompted by the need to “rescue the shed,” the father-son team committed to an extensive restoration journey. Chronicling their efforts on Cronise’s YouTube channel, which has nearly 35,000 subscribers, the restoration project unfolds in more than 30 videos capturing various stages of the shed’s transformation. The initial visit revealed challenges such as overgrowth and an unexpected encounter with a snake, but despite the obstacles, the duo remained resolute in salvaging the structure. The renovation commenced with the removal of the shed’s upper level to facilitate the rebuilding of the roof. Beyond the shed itself, the team dedicated significant effort to enhancing the 30-acre property, clearing land, cutting vines, and removing fallen trees.

Amidst this endeavour, Cronise, pursuing a computer engineering degree at the University of Alabama, found himself acquiring diverse skills, from using a chainsaw to mastering construction techniques. Reflecting on the unexpected turn of events, he expressed how the project expanded his skill set beyond his initial interests in videography, technology, and programming. As he approaches graduation, Cronise’s journey exemplifies the fusion of personal growth and the preservation of a family’s unique and evolving living space.

See Why It Took 15 Years To Make the ‘Fantastic Fungi’ Time-Lapse Documentary https://goodshomedesign.com/15-years-fantastic-fungi-time-lapse-documentary/ https://goodshomedesign.com/15-years-fantastic-fungi-time-lapse-documentary/#respond Sat, 04 Feb 2023 19:20:14 +0000 https://goodshomedesign.com/?p=59843

The Fantastic Fungi documentary was a big hit, as it presented a never-before-seen perspective on the lives of fungi. The documentary took 15 years to make, and now you can get a peek inside the creative process with the help of a 15 short directed by Wired about the making of.
The time-lapse videos were filmed inside director Louie Schwartzberg’s home and take the viewer through each step of a fungi’s life. The director had to shoot the timelapse videos inside, due to the ever-changing weather outdoors and he also needed to be able to control the lighting of the film.
Each shot took 15 minutes to create, leading to 96 frames in 24 hours, which was enough to make 4 seconds of film. Time-lapse videos require a massive commitment from the director’s side and are not an easy job as they also need a patient director. But luckily for the viewers, Schwartzberg is one very patient human being as he dedicated 15 years of his life to creating this fantastic documentary, which is a must-watch if you haven’t already seen it.

Building a house from pallets. From start to finish https://goodshomedesign.com/building-a-house-from-pallets-from-start-to-finish/ https://goodshomedesign.com/building-a-house-from-pallets-from-start-to-finish/#respond Tue, 23 Nov 2021 01:14:13 +0000 http://goodshomedesign.com/?p=57655

Building a house is not an easy task, as years of training are required even for professionals to master such a skill.
But what about building a house from pallets?
This sounds like a more doable task for amateur builders.

The next video tutorial will guide you from start to finish in the art of building a pallet home and you’ll surely want to start right away after watching it.
The result will be the coziest tiny house, made out of pallets and perfect for a short stay in the woods.
Of course, good quality pallets need to be used for this, so make sure you have them in the best condition if choosing to work with recycled ones.
Also, if you’re concerned about rot, keep in mind that these pallets are treated and stored in stacks, and made to be highly durable and resistant in any weather condition.

If you decide to go through with this project and install a stove as well, just like in the tutorial, make sure to use precautions and think of a safe way to have such an item near flammable materials.
Happy building and make sure to share this with your friends too, so they can offer you a helping hand.

Grow an Avocado Tree from Seed https://goodshomedesign.com/grow-an-avocado-tree-from-seed/ https://goodshomedesign.com/grow-an-avocado-tree-from-seed/#respond Fri, 19 Nov 2021 22:06:54 +0000 http://goodshomedesign.com/?p=57548

Growing avocado at home is not an easy task, as many who tried have failed before. Since avocados are highly nutritious fruits, it is worth struggling a bit until finding the perfect tricks to grow them at home. So the next time you buy avocados, make sure to keep the pits and use them to grow a tiny tree.

This idea can also be a great educational DIY to try with your kids as they can learn so much about growing techniques and taking care of plants. So if you’re ready to grow an avocado tree, the first step will be to remove and clean the pit. You have to make sure not to cut or remove the brown skin from the surface of the pit. Next, you’ll need to find the ends of the pit so you’ll know how to place them in water to sprout.

The more pointy end is the top of the pit and this is the part that needs to stay out of the water. The bottom is the place where the root lies and needs to be placed in water. After establishing the ends, pierce the avocado pit with 4 toothpicks to ensure stability when placed in a glass of water.
A good idea would be to stick in the toothpicks at an angle and once you are ready, place half of the seed in a glass of water and find a sunlit place for it.
After that you’ll need to be patient as the sprouting period can take up to 8 weeks but in the end, you’ll have a cute little avocado tree.

In this Video You will learn how to plant Avocado, germinate the seed (step by step the easiest and fastest way the result is excellent).

The ancient art of cat pictures has been recently uncovered by pictures developed from a 120-year-old film found in a time capsule. These capsules are a form of capturing a moment in time for posterity and connecting past generations with future ones.

French photographer and YouTube celebrity, Mathieu Stern, has found a time capsule in the basement of his ancient home. The antique box, which hid a secret dating to the year 1900 included coins, a paper doll, and two glass plate negatives.
These last items fascinated Stern who is a photographer, so he decided to unravel the mystery and develop them with the help of the cyanotype method. The prints had to be handled with a lot of care and after going through the chemical process, they revealed pictures of an adorable feline.
To learn more about the cyanotype method and how Stern developed the ancient pictures, watch the video he made about the process.
