MO.CA (Mobile Catalyst), born from the innovative minds at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), represents a pioneering leap in sustainable mobile living. Crafted from dowel-laminated timber harvested sustainably at Valldaura Labs in the scenic confines of Collserola Natural Park, Barcelona, MO.CA embodies the ethos of ecological design and digital construction techniques. Rooted in the interdisciplinary pursuits of the Master’s program in Advanced Ecological Buildings & Biocities (MAEBB), this self-sufficient abode heralds a new era of mobile habitats, seamlessly blending mobility, sustainability, and resilience.

At the heart of MO.CA lies a profound exploration into the fusion of mobility and sustainability, drawing inspiration from historical traditions of self-sufficiency and contemporary imperatives for adaptable living spaces. In response to the pressing challenges of climate change and the evolving landscape of remote work opportunities, MO.CA emerges as a beacon of innovation, offering not just shelter but a platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and community engagement. From its compact yet functional design optimized for restricted footprints to its seamless integration of essential utilities and communal spaces, MO.CA embodies a vision of holistic living that champions environmental stewardship and human well-being.

Couple Worked 18 Hours a Day to Transform a £37k Van Into a Tulum-Inspired Home on Wheels https://goodshomedesign.com/couple-worked-18-hours-day-transform-37k-van-tulum-inspired-home-wheels/ https://goodshomedesign.com/couple-worked-18-hours-day-transform-37k-van-tulum-inspired-home-wheels/#respond Thu, 28 Dec 2023 21:43:16 +0000 https://goodshomedesign.com/?p=62707

Edden Ram, 31, and Nicole Sun, 23, have not only captured the attention of their 116,000-strong social media audience with their nomadic adventures but have now taken their passion for unconventional living to new heights. The dynamic couple, both influencers in their own right—Edden as a travel filmmaker and Nicole as an artist—decided to embark on an ambitious project, transforming a £37,000 van into a luxury mobile home inspired by the architecture of Tulum. Their journey chronicled on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, has now culminated in the van being put on the market with an impressive six-figure price tag.

The conversion process was no small feat for Edden and Nicole, as they dedicated four months of intense labor to turn their vision into reality. With no prior building experience, the couple embraced a steep learning curve, mastering everything from design and woodworking to electrical and plumbing work. A TikTok video shared by the couple showcases the stunning result of their hard work, featuring a van equipped with a pull-out coffee table, lounge, queen-size bed, skylight, kitchen with pop-up counter and induction hob, microwave, pull-out pantry, wardrobe, filtered water tap, and even a bathroom with running water, flushable toilet, shower, marble sink, and mirror.

The van is topped with a 480-watt solar panel deck, creating a sunbathing spot that complements the luxurious interior. Having conquered the challenge of transforming a van into a mobile haven, Edden and Nicole are now setting their sights on an even more ambitious endeavor: building a tiny home village in Mexico. Driven by their Tulum-inspired design and armed with newfound building skills, the couple’s journey continues to captivate and inspire their followers.

This 2-story Motorhome with a kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom can detach to be its own tiny home https://goodshomedesign.com/this-2-story-motorhome-with-a-kitchen-bathroom-and-bedroom-can-detach-to-be-its-own-tiny-home/ https://goodshomedesign.com/this-2-story-motorhome-with-a-kitchen-bathroom-and-bedroom-can-detach-to-be-its-own-tiny-home/#comments Mon, 20 Apr 2020 01:13:40 +0000 http://goodshomedesign.com/?p=50396

Mobile cabin homes are usually all the same: tiny, on wheels and with a similar design. But this micro cabin can be detached from the vehicle that is transporting it and this is such a cool twist. It called the Haaks Opperland campervan and is a two-story tiny cabin placed on a compact Fiat flatbed truck.
So if you’re planning to go camping or just go into a silent retreat by yourself, you can drive to your favorite spot and drop off the tiny house there. The entire cabin is just 13-foot-long but has plenty of space for you to sit, work, dine and sleep inside of it.
Since it is made by a Dutch company, it must be shipped overseas, and the cabin is really expensive for what it has to offer as it costs $140,000. But the idea is great and if someone would adapt it for those on a budget it would surely be worth the investment.
The original design has a toilet and a kitchen too, and the bedroom is located upstairs. And since has cabin has a side door that can be flipped, it offers the illusion of extra space and connection with the outdoors.

The space is tight, but they manage to fit in the major necessities!

Couple convert a VAN into their flat of dreams https://goodshomedesign.com/couple-convert-a-van-into-their-flat-of-dreams/ https://goodshomedesign.com/couple-convert-a-van-into-their-flat-of-dreams/#comments Mon, 27 Nov 2017 01:17:18 +0000 http://goodshomedesign.com/?p=45165

Being a young couple in a big city can be quite challenging when it comes to finding cheap rent without giving up on your hobbies. Since rent prices are becoming increasingly higher by day, young people tend to search for alternatives. The same applies for this next couple, who decided to give up their 9 to 5 jobs and up-cycle an old van that eventually became their home. Adam and Nikki got tired of living in the city, spending all their salaries on rent and bills and having to give up their dreams of travelling. So one day, they stumbled upon a white Ford Transit Luton on Ebay and bought it for $4,500 and they spent another $6,500 to convert it into a welcoming apartment. The coolest part about this story is that they did everything by themselves, learning about DIY and up-cycling projects from Youtube. After the reconstruction, the van became a functioning apartment with a kitchen, shower, bedroom and a nice little porch for sunny days. Now Adam and Nikki can relax and focus on their plans of visiting Europe throughout a period of 1 year.

Aussie couple builds off-grid mobile home with 2 containers https://goodshomedesign.com/aussie-couple-builds-off-grid-mobile-home-with-2-containers/ https://goodshomedesign.com/aussie-couple-builds-off-grid-mobile-home-with-2-containers/#respond Wed, 18 Oct 2017 00:02:01 +0000 http://goodshomedesign.com/?p=43955

Paul Chambers had began building a home out of two shipping containers as a project, but when his wife got tired of suburbia and put their four-bedroom home on the market, his project became the couple’s full-time home. The containers are cleverly and creatively transformed into quite a nice and welcoming home, with a kitchen/bathroom and a living room that doubles as a bedroom. And this is not all the good news because the home is completely off grid, both electric and water, making it a real house on wheels! A 3kw Honda generator was installed initially, but later 2Kw of photovoltaic panels and a bank of batteries were brought in to replace the generator. In the video provided, you can watch the entire story, from start to finish. Let it inspire you to build your own home, whether it’s just as eco-friendly as this one, or an entirely new one.

Paul and Sarah Chambers were living in rural Scotland when Paul received a job offer in Australia. They packed their belongings and moved to a large home with a pool in an Australian suburb. After only a few months, they began to tire of spending so much of their income on their home. They also felt they’d lost touch with nature and a more active lifestyle.

Paul has published an ebook explaining how he built the home including a step-by-step guide: buying and moving shipping containers, a wiring diagram and schematics, installing solar panels and a breakdown of costs.

Tesla Model H announced: a plug-in hybrid mobile home that is both cozy and luxurious https://goodshomedesign.com/tesla-model-h-announced-a-plug-in-hybrid-mobile-home-that-is-both-cozy-and-luxurious/ https://goodshomedesign.com/tesla-model-h-announced-a-plug-in-hybrid-mobile-home-that-is-both-cozy-and-luxurious/#comments Thu, 10 Mar 2016 01:33:54 +0000 http://goodshomedesign.com/?p=34544 Tesla-Mobile-Home-Interior

Usually, beautifully designed products are quite expensive, and the ones produced by Tesla brand perfectly fit that description. Elon Musk figured out that people are so impressed by the Tesla electric cars that they will make many sacrifices in order to be able to afford one. Recently, Tesla revealed their plan to include among their products a plug-in hybrid mobile home, probably an attempt to expand their market share by introducing new and cheaper innovations.

The name of the mobile home is “Model H”, and it looks pretty similar to a gigantic Model X. This new model is going to fill a gap in the market that has not been filled before this. “Model H” was designed especially for those so eager to own a Tesla model that they even defaulted on their homes in order to afford one.

The new Tesla model is priced at $120,000, being more affordable than some of the previous models. You can accommodate a family of four in it, having at your disposal the necessary appliances for a comfortable and luxurious life on the road. Among the amenities we could mention are the following ones: flat-screen TVs, a space-efficient kitchen, a bathroom with composting toilet and water-saving shower, and a built-in video monitoring system. The last feature can be used to supervise the safety of your Model S, since Model H is not also equipped with a garage.

The prototype was finished in time for spring, and now we are excited to see when we can pre-order it. Musk recently said on Twitter that those who already own a Model S might be eligible for a discount regarding the new model. Moreover, we will most likely have it delivered within days after assembly if we place an online order. Pretty exciting news!

Here’s an idea of how you can easily turn a school bus into a tiny house and have a lot of fun while doing the whole process. The design is just like the one in a common home. You have the comfort of a large bed, a welcoming sofa, carpeted floor and a well equipped kitchen…

Big Maroon Motorhome https://goodshomedesign.com/big-maroon-motorhome/ https://goodshomedesign.com/big-maroon-motorhome/#comments Sat, 29 Mar 2014 13:30:32 +0000 http://goodshomedesign.com/?p=15797 Motorhome

If you prefer to travel in a mobile home, but aren’t quite attracted to the modern RVs available in the market, you are about to be impressed! This big maroon is built in a unique DIY project spanned over almost 42 years. From an old flatbed farm truck, used for a long period of time at full extent, to a classic mobile home that literally turn heads in the streets. The bulky yet stylish motor-home features big exterior aluminum storage boxes that were added throughout the 80s to be used for general storage. It’s impressive how much stuff it can accommodate, like a generator, an outboard motor or an inflatable boat. The interior doesn’t disappoint as well! It incorporates kitchen facilities, bathroom with toilet, and a forced air gas furnace.

The design was made by The Federal Motorhome Company, which also did the carpentry, assembly and cabinet work. Customization of the furniture (fabric, color) was handled by the owner, making the DIY level of much more praiseworthy. With facilities like a shower, or lavatory, or water heater, the vehicle is comparable to modern RVs, in terms of level of comfort. But the handmade touches to it were the trigger that transformed the old farm truck into a genuine home. We would recommend you try a similar kind of project, but it would be wise if you just draw inspiration from this; 42 years is a real long time for a DIY project.

Small House on Wheels: The Linden https://goodshomedesign.com/small-house-wheels-linden/ https://goodshomedesign.com/small-house-wheels-linden/#respond Wed, 08 Jan 2014 09:37:35 +0000 http://goodshomedesign.com/?p=14128 linden-house-on-wheels

Tiny houses on trailers are becoming increasingly popular between homeowners but campers as well. So whether you want to travel around while always feeling (and being) at home or you fancy a comfortable trip in the mountains for the weekend (without the trouble of living in a cold tent), this type of home is the perfect answer. The mobile home can be easily the right replacement of a regular house. Take a look at the images to convince yourself that we aren’t mistaken when we say that.

The designers called this project The Linden. The Linder offer a great residence where the all wood-walls embrace a clever and tasteful designed interior. The living room, suitable for small meetings, is extended to the outside via a nice porch, where you can enjoy the natural views. The loft also includes two dormers which let in more of the natural light and gives space as well. Decorated with style and modern day appliances (like a cooking hob or an A/C unit) and clever features (like storage units built-in the walls) makes the design much more appealing.
