70-Year-Old Man Defies Expectations by Becoming One of the World’s Oldest Medical Graduates

At 70 years old, Toh Hong Keng has defied age-related stereotypes by becoming one of the world’s oldest medical graduates. A retired tech executive from Hong Kong, Toh decided to pursue his medical degree at the University PHINMA in Cebu, Philippines, just days after retiring in 2019. Despite facing doubts from family and friends, he was determined to prove that age was no barrier to his ambitions. Toh candidly shared the physical challenges he faced while studying, including diminished memory, eyesight, and hearing. Yet, driven by a desire to do something meaningful, he persisted in his studies, having already completed degrees in economics, chemistry, and electronic engineering. His journey was not without setbacks—he failed a pediatrics exam in his third year and faced the difficulties of online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Toh’s persistence and hard work have earned him the admiration of classmates and the global community. His dedication to the demanding medical school requirements, including the rigorous one-year hospital placement, demonstrates his resilience and passion. Though unsure if he’ll pursue the additional courses needed to practice as a licensed doctor, Toh hopes to use his new skills in consulting, particularly in the field of allergy and immunology diagnostics. His remarkable achievement sends a powerful message to others: it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. As Toh said, “If you have a dream to be a medical doctor, you can still do it at any age.” His story is an inspiration to anyone considering a new path in life, regardless of age.
