I’m gonna try the plastic bottle one when mine collapes 😉
We’re near the Canadian border in VT’s snowbelt region, and we have stiff winds. I do short (10′ lengths) low tunnels with heavy plastic. The arches are 10′ conduit pipes bent with a $39 pipe bender and pushed into the earth (about 1 foot deep on each end). The central spine and parallel supports on both top ‘edge’s are attached (with twist ties at either end then duct tape at each joint) UNDER the arches for a smooth surface for the sheet plastic. Easy to move, cheap to build. The snow gets to be about 4’ deep here come late March/mid-April, so flimsy supports (esp. PVC piping), sharp exposed edges of pipes/ joiners on upper areas will tear through the plastic under snow & wind, and weak/thin plastic sheeting, and shallow curves will break down under heavy snow and winds. Also, they need lots of weighted support at bases to hold plastic down. With a 4-5 month window of opportunity for growing things here, protection is essential for pushing the seasons and transplants. Most of the designs above have helpful info in them, but would not hold up under these harsh conditions. Some of the designs offer great ideas I can adapt for here.
Movable designs are critical for moving components to rows (squash esp.) that really need row-cover protection later on. Conduit pipes can be pulled up and pushed into the ground elsewhere–PVC does not hold up well to this, though it’s easier to cut with a pipecutter.
My first PVC-piping greenhouse (2″x6″ base with loops for the pipes) with 3-ml plastic lasted about a week–high winds twisted the wasted labor into shreds. Poor quality plastic sheeting breaks down by summer’s/winter’s end into small brittle pieces that blow all over the environment.
We have built the geodome style and it works great up here in Canada. We have strong winds and lots of snow, and this shape takes it all without any problem!
