If you are looking for cheap, but still aesthetic ways to build a new fence, you should try pallet fencing. Pallets are a cheap material, accessible to anyone and they can be modeled according to everyone’s needs. From couches, to tables and garden pieces, pallets can be used to create a new piece for your home without spending a lot of money. And now you can even create fences out of pallets. The style of the fence depends on you and the way you decorate the pallets. For a trendy look, paint each pallet a different color and choose vivid colors if you want to make the fence really special. If you would like a more classical or vintage look, you can paint the pallets in a natural color than give them a rustic look. Don’t forget that the fence is like a mirror for your house and it should reflect the style of your interior, so make it as welcoming as possible and make sure it matches the rest of your home.
1. This pallet fence would be great for pigs or even goats. It is movable and reusable.
2. Make a Pallet Fence that will cost you nothing
3. A pallet fence in the garden
4. How to build a pallet fence and how many pallets do you need for 100 ft of fence.
If you’re using the 40×48 inch pallets it would take about 44 pallets to make a 100ft fence. But if you can acquire some of the longer 8 or 10ft pallets, then you’ll need much fewer.
bloody brilliant
I live in a village with dogs running around loose and having a garden without a fence is asking for trouble!! This is an amazing practical “green” idea! Thank you so much!
Having raised pigs, the pallets are not ideal for fencing pigs (they would be under it in no time). However, it’s a great idea for sheep and goats. It’s also and good idea for fencing off your garden.
My pig pen is made from pellets a is her shelter , you just need to space star pickets closer as they do push on it, six months its still standing. for one pet pig that is! 🙂 I have used this also for the goats ad sheep. its a brilliant idea and so cheap!
I’ve used pallet fencing for both pigs and goats without problem. I even made a goat shelter out of pallets. It’s featured on 1001 pallets if you look under goat house.
My dad used to run 1 strand of electric fence inside the pig pen….once they knew where it was? They’d never cross that area – even after he removed the wire
How are the affixed to the ground?
Um great ideas but is there a how too?
Star pickets (or similar) at the corners to give more stability screw or wire together 🙂
Pallets are cheap but not necessarily green. Pallets are rarely 1 time use. Most companies will reuse them and some will even pay to get them back. Constantly taking them out of circulation means more pallets must be made to replace the ones that someone made into a fence. It They are also made with the cheapest wood available. Meaning that in less than 10 years that diy project will have to be scrapped because it is now rotten.
They won’t listen. Everyone’s pallet crazy, these days.
That’s true but you can treat the wood too, some people use sump others use linseed or just paint.
My husband’s company requires a ‘clean room environment’. Once a pallet has been unloaded and leaves the floor, it can not be reused. We’ve been the lucky recipients of several free cedar pallets.
I understand the pallets won’t last for more than 7-10 years, if that (I’m in a sub-tropical climate with bad termite issues).
However, if I don’t have the funds to get permanent fencing, I’d rather have some fencing than none : )
Thank you for the reminder that this isn’t a permanent solution though…
If a company is planning on getting rid of the pallets anyway , it’s green. Local places here burn them or send them to a place that chips them up to be burned at a coal powered electric plant. A fence for five years is more environmentally friendly than a giant bonfire.
You need to check your math! You said,
“If you’re using the 40×48 inch pallets it would take about 44 pallets to make a 100ft fence”
If a pallet is 4 feet long (48 inches = 4 feet) then it would only take 25 pallets to make 100 feet of fence (100 divided by 4 = 25)
If you are using the 40″ dimension, it would take 30 pallets for 100′ of fence
It could be they were taking into account the cross brace pieces as well.
I think they meant 100ft on each side, which would be 25×4 =100 pallets.
Nehemiah, if you do not also turn one side ways every so many feet you will have no stability and the fence would tumble over. This is why you need more than the thirty boards it takes to make up the footage
I see what you’re saying here but we have a local Red Cross recycle centre that has thousands for a couple of bucks each. Most companies now just forget about them
Craig.. where is this located? I need about 100 of them..lol
Cheapest wood available.. that’s a false statement.. most pallets are built out of hardwoods usually oak or maple sometimes ash..all very durable..as pallets need to handle heavy heavy loads… worked a pallet factory as a teen in pa..
It’s quite interesting to see what you can do with a bunch of old wooden pallets. I think that most people associate them with warehouses and shipping items, but not fences. Even still, if you are going to be doing something like this, do be sure that you know what you are doing.
I’m all for creative ideas. The whole pallet thing worries me.i see people selling items made out of pallets for indoor/outdoor use. A lot the pallets are sprayed with arsenic. Just worries me about potential harm for kids and pets. Just try to find out if the ones your using have been sprayed with arsenic.
I think wood pallet fencing is a neat idea, You can design so many different ways and if you sand it down and treat it would last long time. Really no.need for rude negative comments it’s nice to see people like me who has low budget that works many hrs can be creative for near next to nothing money wise…..I’ve seen really cool ideas. I’m grateful for new ideas.
This is great ideas to make something amazing from old wood pallet
Creative designs! I think wood pallet fencing is a great idea. All the designs are excellent.
if you want to know how to make it yourself , just go to WoodPrix webpage. There you’ll find your answers 🙂
You can always treat the wood so it won’t rot. Or you can paint it. A spray on deck treatment would be the best thing to use to deter the pallets from rotting.
