Handling a garden in a way you can maximize the surface used and the resulting output of plants, whilst still managing to bring out beauty in the décor is quite the challenge. The answer to this problem is to be found in a barrel. Actually, with the whole barrel.. We’ll show you a nice and creative solution that will let you have over 50 plants in a 2 by 2 foot area. This is how you can make a DIY barrel planter. Here is what you will need to have:
• a standard 55 gallon plastic barrel;
• a marker and plastic ruler;
• drill and half an inch drill bit;
• electric jigsaw;
• a regular torch;
• a 2by4 with an end cut in 45 degrees;
• a piece of 6-inch diameter pipe;
• small pieces of wood;
• 2.5 inch long and 0.25 inch round bolts and washers;

First, ensure the barrel didn’t contain any pesticide, because it will ruin all of the plants later on. Saw off the lid and proceed onto creating the pockets. Mark out the slits with a marker. See all details in the link below..
Hey, thats a pretty neat idea! I just started gardening, and have used pallets to make my planter box. One suuggestion would be to use your torch outside, heating thatplasticwith an open flame is definately releasing toxins into your air, also you may wanna try MAPP gas for your torch, it comes in the yellow bottle and burns hotter, so you can melt it quicker. Definately outside though, I could almost feel myself getting a headache as you torched your barrel.

At work we use a pail off cold water and a wet rag to cool pvc after bending
Betting it would work here too if doing project outside where it might be easier
And safer to do after the hole markings are made.
I would advise against heating up plastic with a blow torch in an enclosed space.
Question: Besides lettuce and strawberries what would you plant in this? I actually have 4 barrels collecting dust/dirt in our backyard and I don’t want to get rid of them, but….. what to do with them.
