Don’t you just love to recycle old pairs of jeans? The great thing about denim is that it is a very resistant material and it doesn’t get damaged easily with time. So an old pair of jeans can always be a great supply for a DIY project. If you have more than just one pair of jeans, then you can make this great rug, using the patchwork technique. In case you do not own that many old pairs of jeans, just go to a yard sale and purchase some. Don’t worry if the jeans are not the same color, the more colorful the rug will be the better. Start cutting small squares out of each pair of jeans and place them next to each other. Before you start, measure a rug you already have and make this jeans rug the same size. When you have lots of squares, enough to make a rug, sew them together using a sewing machine. Use neutral colored thread. You will also need a large material to use as the back of the rug. FYI in the south we call it material. It is the same thing as fabric.
I live in Ohio and we still call it material or fabric either way.
In Nebraska we call it material OR fabric – same thing!

Donalda is correct, it is fabric and should called fabric, not material when talking specifically about what is being used to sew with. While fabric is always a material, material is not always a fabric. Material could be referring to any object, wood is a material, so is steel.

This is ridiculous. Yes material can be used for any type of project but if this is a quilt project/pattern I would think common sense would dictate that it is fabric…..geesh
technically it’s material from a pair of jeans, fabric is something I buy at the store. Just my thoughts on the subject, lol
I’ve made a twin bed sized one in the past. It is super warm! It is a cute/neat use of material. It was asking A LOT of my regular sewing maching….I wondered if it could finish without a breakdown. IMHO…Having been there/done that, I would recommend using it as a rug/floor covering. The end product is extremely heavy and nearly too bulky for a standard washing machine (my twin size project) and line drying took forever. MAYBE you could make a bed spread in smaller finished pieces that connected with large deco buttons….could be unbottoned and washed 1/2 or 1/4 at a time…..

I made one of these 16 years ago for my daughter out of her old jeans on one side, my old t-shirts on the other and 1 inch batting. It ended up being 110 by 90 inches and weights 54 pounds. It is also very warm so I would not use the batting in the next one I would do and since I live in upper Wisconsin where temps in the winter are -10 to -30, that is saying a lot.
I’ve heard a lot of older, say, more scholarly people refer to heavy blankets/quilts as rugs.
