It is quite easy to do: simply cut the size you want your rug be and cut flaps into strips of the same size roughly. This is one of those arts that can be done even by your kids (when it comes to tying, not cutting!). Check out Michelle Kaufmann’s ‘s video – she explains and shows step-by-step the whole process, so you can understand every little thing. For bathroom rugs, try using fabrics which are very resistant to washing and which dry very quickly. Anyway, for bathroom or not, ALWAYS avoid fabrics that fray, because your house will be full of lint!

microfiber might work, or the kind of thinner fleece that lightweight robes are made out of. I don’t think think either one those would fray.
I would use cotton t-shirt material. I hate microfiber because not all microfiber is the same.
I haven’t tried this – but I would guess that old T-shirts would work well – they don’t fray, and if you cut the strips a little wider, they will ‘roll’ on themselves to give a nice ‘thick’ appearance, yet would be small enough to fit through smaller grid if that is all you can find (that’s all I have and I will try it with that). Also – lets you ‘design’ a rug with lots of different colors or make a ‘mosaic’ type with the different colors. Very easy to cut up T-shirts too to get the same size strips with a rotary cutter and a mat. Another thing to point out – often thrift stores sell old ‘pitted’ t-shirts or ones that aren’t likely to sell for $1/bag – that’s the way to go – recycle, re-use and re-purpose! Was looking for something to ‘do’ while watching the ads on the Super-Bowl game this year – maybe this will be it!

The “screen” looks like the stuff you would use for a hooked rug also known as latch hook. Herrschners.com or Joann Fabrics–Joann has it listed under latch canvas. Good luck 🙂
