Judge Rules Government Can Ban Vegetable Gardens Because They’re ‘Ugly’ ( UPDATE!!! )

It may come as a surprise to most of people who grow vegetable in their garden, that in the US, it is illegal! At least, that’s what a case in Miami has brought to public light. Bear in mind that we are talking about the front yard, which in the view of the State, represented by attorney Richard Sarafan in the above-mentioned case, is in the legitimate purpose of the government to make it aesthetically pleasing. In other words, your front yard is subject to government guidelines, just as the front of your home is. And there is no `fundamental right to grow vegetables in your front yard`. So if you are planning to grow your own vegetable plant, organic or otherwise, make sure you do it in the backyard. You will not be bothered by the government and you can plant them in any fashion and style you desire.

“Miami, FL — Last week, a Miami-Dade judge became the focus of much-deserved anger when she ruled on an ordinance banning front yard vegetable gardens. The village of Miami Shores, according to the ruling, has every right to take legal action against residents who dare to grow food in their own yards because they are “ugly.”
The ruling was a whopping ten pages long as it was filled with legal analysis and definitions of what constitutes a vegetable. Even though she ruled in favor of the ban, Judge Monica Gordo acknowledged that she wasn’t quite sure how a vegetable garden can ruin the aesthetics of one’s property”. write TheFreeThoughtProject

Because it’s right there in the Constitution, explicitly granting government the power to enforce neurotic obsessions with conformity. I forget which Article.

  3. Patti says:

I will never understand this but if they have been doing if for 17 yrs why now is it a problem, since it was allowed all those years this couple should be grandfathered in

What idiots reign in Flordia! It’s the reason I left the south! But it’s ok to pour ton of pesticides on your lawns that kills the bees that help produce our food. I think it’s reduclous that someone else can tell anyone if they can grow food to eat on there own land!

It’s not everywhere in the south that has dumb ordinances like that. We here in AR (at least in the rural areas and small towns, pretty much do what we want when it comes to raising our food. We can even have chickens, goats, a cow,…………..here in town.

  5. Bryan Oliver says:

Now I have to ask, What if they had planted one of those ugly Southwest desert type landscapes, that are very common in Miami by the way, or Even Worse one of those landscapes where they use all Florida native plants that look like a bunch of weeds ?

  6. Steph says:

Glad I live where it’s still legal to raise our own food in the front, back or even in the side yard. If we want chickens, a goat, cow, that’s ok too! I love small town living!

  7. Steph says:

Oh, yeah and it’s still legal to catch rain water and use it.
