how do you grow lettuce in a gallon of water ?
These look like gallon jugs and there is no water…just soil. Why are there never any directions for these things you show??? Can’t you post the URL from where they orignated?
There are no directions because the pictures are self explanatory.
Simply cut out the side of an empty square plastic water bottle container, fill 2/3 to 3/4 full with gardening soil mix, add seeds or plants, water as needed.
Loose leaf lettuces don’t need as much space as head lettuces and they are probably harvesting them early anyway as part of a salad mix.
Read that inner part of organic,romaine lettuce, when planted germinates a new head. How? 8 have perished….
Just wondering if I could grow tomatoes in these …..
I tried growing tomatoes in tires with soil and it wasn’t deep enough. Maybe if you use a 5 gallon container and stand it upright. The tomatoes got so top heavy that in the shallow soil they tipped and pulled the tomato cages with them, had to tie them. This year am using tires 2 deep.
Be careful using tires to grow the food your family will consume. The chemicals and the rubber leaches into the soil and hence, into the roots of your plant. At the least I’d consider using a plastic or newspaper to line the tires before filling with soil. You can still punch holes in each through the bottom for drainage.
I love ideas and your site has lots of good ones. But, it concerns me that you are promoting growing food in plastic … and, plastic that is very fragile and not meant for anything other than recycling. It’s not the first time I’ve seen you do this. I would reconsider. I know how hard it must be to constantly be looking for new content … but …
Plastic is ideal for many thing, if you treat it well, and it is also good to use them instead of trowing them away, and it is difficult to do the same in glass bottles 🙂
A good and simple idea! I just moved to a new place and I was thinking of a small garden. The balcony needs some color and few plants to look more friendly and comforting. This idea is exactly what i needed, thanks for sharing it!
You don’t grow them in water. You use the empty carton. Cut off the side. Fill it with soil. Put seeds or plant in dirt and water. That’s all
There’s no directions because it’s common sense. Empty carton, cut off side, fill with soil, put in plant, water and watch it grow.
Can anyone please recommend what plants will grow well in this type of way. I’m new to growing my own, so not sure which plants would thrive in the shallow containers. Any suggestions would be most helpful! TIA?
