Raising Backyard Chickens

Chickens are a great addition to any backyard garden experience. We cover some simple coop ideas and management concepts.

When you decide to keep backyard chickens, you are investing your time, money, and emotional attachment. The last thing you want is for a bird to die because it flew over a fence and into harm’s way. Clipping wings is easy to do and painless for the birds. Clipping one wing only will make a chicken feel lopsided as soon as it attempts to fly. Many chicken keepers prefer this method rather than clipping both wings.

How much food does one layer eat per day? I have 24 Hens and 2 Roosters. I’m trying to figure out if I am feeling them enough.

This is not the correct way to clip wings. You will clip a blood feather and injure the bird. Second you should be clipping at the base of the feather not the middle or else the bird will still obtain a degree of flight. Lastly not all of the primaries need to be clipped. Five will do depending on the brid.
