The proportions to which the recycling movement has come to influence our lifestyle is truly inspiring. We not only have now the opportunity we hadn’t a decade or two ago to reinvent products we commonly use into something completely different, saving in the process a bit of our impact on the environment. Take this BBQ or fire pit for example. The main component is a used car wheel. There’s no danger of rusting because of the stainless steel the car wheel is made of. As you can see from the photos, the actual repurposing isn’t complex. Just a grill and some steel parts to act as legs and supports for your meat. At an approximate cost of under £60, this type of barbeque grill is much more convenient than any other alternative from the stores. Be sure you spend an awesome time grilling some burgers or toasting marshmallow with thinking about the environment and the positive impact recycling can have on it.

Are you sure this is safe? These things come with some serious chemical coatings on them. Some rims are galvanized and the fumes are extremely toxic. I would just stick to the good ol’ fashioned fire on the ground.
Burn the coatings off first before you use it for anything else. They will burn off the first time you burn in it.
Every wheel in these pictures is steel. As I imagine would be any wheel someone would want to use.
I’ve never seen a galvanized wheel from a car in the last 20 years, I have seen some old galvanized pans though. Weird how that works.

Would like to see a picture of the grass after the chimera style burner has been alight for a while. It looks too low to the ground to leave it undamaged.

Don’t use concrete. It can explode. Just put legs on it.
Once you get a good hot fire going it will burn all the coating off. Once it’s gone, it’s gone and will be safe for you and the kiddos to roast marshmallows and hot dogs. 🙂

Once you’ve burned a fire in it all the paint will burn off,and he had a paving stone under it so the grass is dead anyway,I will put legs on mine so you don’t have to bend over I have a bad back,and will use a truck wheel its bigger

Seriously!? Comment morons can turn anything negative. I would say that the estimate for cost is the only thing that is off about this, though not a new idea by any account. Never seen an aluminum stamped rim, nor have I seen a galvanized rim in at least 15 years. Any grill I have ever used gets a good seasoning (hot fire, oil, keep hot 45 minutes, oil again) before actually cooking on it, this is true for store bought or home made. Those who can’t, comment on why you shouldn’t.

Great idea, I’ll probably make one, except the article was incorrect about one thing! Most wheels are made of mild steel not stainless steel in fact I have never seen a stainless steel wheel & I’ve been around and worked cars for nearly forty years. That writer needs to do better research.
The article says car wheels are stainless steel, they are not. They are painted steel or aluminum. It’s a good idea, just stay clear of the first firing.
I am starting to make one of these now, I am wondering how you would cover the bottom holes of the rims so nothing falls down.
