Here’s an interesting and useful idea. This is a common practice in Third World countries and a very clever money saving idea. You will need an empty plastic soda bottle, water and bleach to make your own solar bulb, providing 55 watts of light. You will find below the list of materials and a video tutorial for this project. If you are planning to go off the grid or just save some extra money, keep this project bookmarked and try it when you have some free time.

What do you get with sunshine and an old plastic bottle filled with water and chlorine? Thanks to Alfred Moser and a group of MIT students, you get a 55-watt solar bulb that refracts sunlight! It’s powerful enough to light up a home but more than that it’s environmentally friendly, inexpensive, and easy to make.

    It is amazing,I would like to make it in my home but it is not clear enough how to get sunshine to be used as a bulb.

    This a great idea! Many people in third world countries live without electricity, it is something they can implement

    How much do you plan to charge for the whole tutorial, like information about ratio of ingrediences or their purity, does it work only in liter bottle?

    Seriously it is common sense as to how much bleach to use. No more than a tbsp or so. Also they are not charging anything! Follow the NEXT arrows to the third page and the video is there. I had no trouble finding it.

    Would be great in the out house on our land during the day. At night a flashlight would work .
