Government satellite data released on July 6 revealed a remarkable 33.6% drop in deforestation compared to the same period under former President Jair Bolsonaro. The rainforest’s alerts covered 2,650 square kilometres from January to June, marking a substantial improvement from the previous year’s alarming 4,000 square kilometres. This positive trend represents a stark departure from the four years of escalating destruction that characterized Bolsonaro’s administration.
João Paulo Capobianco, the executive secretary of the Environment Ministry, expressed satisfaction at the reversal of the deforestation trend during a presentation in Brasilia. He highlighted the successful efforts to curb the growth in deforestation, emphasizing that the data demonstrated a clear departure from the previous upward trajectory. While the June figures indicated a 41% reduction in alerts, traditionally a period marked by an increase in deforestation during the dry season, Capobianco cautioned that the full-year results would depend on the challenges that lie ahead. Lula’s commitment to addressing illegal logging and environmental concerns appears to be yielding positive results, as evidenced by the encouraging data from the first half of his presidency.
The deforestation data presented on July 6th, 2023 was derived from the Deter system, managed by the National Institute for Space Research, a federal agency in Brazil. This system focuses on detecting real-time deforestation and provides timely insights into environmental changes. Although Deter offers valuable information, the most accurate deforestation calculations are obtained from another system called Prodes, which releases data annually. The positive developments reported through Deter signal a potential shift in Brazil’s approach to environmental protection, with President Lula’s administration making strides in addressing the longstanding concerns about deforestation in the Amazon.
