If you care about nature, you can not be impressed by the multitude of animals and birds Mother Nature has covered the Earth with. If you are careful about not polluting the environment, you will be considerate about the faith of all the creatures that inhabit it. We propose you an interesting and creative project: make cute little bird houses out of PET bottles. You won’t have a great impact on the interior design of your residence, but you will make sure birds have one in the first place. For this project to be complete, grab the following list of materials:
• some plastic bottles;
• a pair of sharp scissors;
• paint and brush;
• a string of wire;
Start by cutting the PET in halves. The top part will go over the bottom one so feel free to shape the lower side of the top in a more house-like manner; you will want this to be the `roof`. The next step will be to paint the house in a colorful way. Do both pieces and on the inside as well as the outside part. Leave them to dry before actual assembly. Don’t forget to punch a couple of holes in the lid. You will need this in order to put the string of wire through and close the loop so the birds can sit comfortably inside the PET home. Be encouraged to decorate in a lively manner. You now have completed your environment-friendly DIY project. Feel proud!

This is a great project and I would love to do it as an activity with an elderly group I know who would love to make bird houses. However I need more information. These directions are incomplete. Like how you attach the bottom and top? Is gluing going to be strong enough to hold? And if using glue what kind did you use? Or did you punch holes in the bottom and string wire though that making the loop and feeding it through the top? Also what kind of paint did you use? More information PLEASE!! I would really like to do this. Thank YOU! 🙂

I think these are super cute and am going to play with making some. I agree that they are incomplete directions. Personally I would punch 2 holes opposite each other towards the top of the bottom piece, running the wire or twine then up and thru the punched holes in the top securing the bottom to the top. I wouldn’t think glue would be strong enough. Also I think seeing the top overlaps the bottom that will provide the weather resistance. It says to paint the inside and you don’t want to do that in a bird house. …… my thoughts anyway on this project
You actually don’t want to pain the inside of the houses. The chemicals in the paint can cause a lot of harm to the birds. Very cool otherwise, though! 🙂
Same questions as above. How to you keep the top attached to the bottom? I’m assuming you would use wire it’s better than twine, I think the birds would pull the twine apart to use for there house lol, and I would not paint inside, because of the fumes, and as for the paint regular paint would wash off in the rain? The directions are incomplete.

Thankyou all for your feedback and questions! Yes, the two pieces should be attached to each other via the wire. Glue would only prove useless. It’s better to place the wire through some holes made in the sides of the bottom part of the bottle, then up to the hole in the lid.
Painting the inside is indeed not necessary, but according to what paint you use (non-toxic and unwashable) it’s your decision.

I have used this idea because I simply adored it when I viewed it on pintrest. I have attached the top and bottom using wire, my 6 year old daughter done most of the work so it was quite easy.. She used acrylic paints and sticky tape. I then coated it using enamel clear gloss. I am confused about the PET bottles. I am trying to use the 2 liter plastic drink bottles and I am having trouble getting them to fit when I cut them and assemble them together. Am I using the wrong size bottle or what am I doing wrong. I am trying to make one for my VBS

I’m going to be trying this project soon. You could probably put slits around the roof portion so it fans out a little to fit them together.

Directions very vague but I’m assuming you could use a hot glue gun to glue pieces together
How do you avoid sharp edges where you’ve cut the plastic?
